"Honestly, no," he laughs when asked whether he thought he had a chance of winning. "I'd never won anything before." Then came the call. "I was on site when they phoned me. The first person I told was my wife." That call would eventually take the couple to Zanzibar, where they enjoyed everything from visiting spice farms and exploring Stone Town to feeding sea turtles and experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the local people.
One highlight stood above the rest. "I'm a huge Queen fan, so visiting Freddie Mercury's childhood home was incredible. It was a dream come true."
For Wickus, the experience felt worlds apart from his normal day-to-day routine on construction sites. "Looking back, I still have to pinch myself," he says.
Yet what makes the story even more remarkable is how ordinary it began, with products he was already using as part of his work.
